What Information Does the 1926 Irish Census Contain?

Information collected includes the usual details: names, relationships, ages, sex, marital status and whether the person was orphaned. It contains further details than many census returns. You can find out whether a person spoke Irish or English, which is a particularly interesting detail given the cultural significance of the Irish language at the time. It also records religion, occupation and place of employment. In addition, it records the number of years of marriage, children born within that marriage, and details of any previous marriages, making it an invaluable source for building out your family tree.

You can even see the signature of the head of the household who completed the form, alongside that of the enumerator. Could one of your ancestors have carried out that very role?

The House and Building Return

In addition to the Household Form A1, there is also the House and Building Return (Form B), which offers a fascinating glimpse into the homes your ancestors lived in. This can tell you about the size and condition of the property, giving you a broader picture of your ancestor's way of life and the community they lived in.
